2010 will be a very important year for each of the big American professional sports leagues. The NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement ("CBA") is set to expire at the end of the 2010 season, the NBA CBA expires after its 2010/11 seasons, and the MLB has until December, 11, 2011 before the current CBA expires. Thus, this year will be a crucial period full of negotiations between the owners and players' associations in each sport. Instead of permitting the general public to merely read one-sided opinions about existing terms that should be modified or new terms that should be added to these agreements, we would like to bring the issues to the forefront of academia by establishing a group of intellectuals to bargain collectively in Gainesville, Florida and engage in a thoughtful discourse about why CBAs exist, how they help players/owners, key terms that will be argued, etc. The date of the Symposium set for Friday, January 29, 2010. |
